Preamble
The Student Education Association of Illinois State University is founded upon the ideas of democracy, and as such derives its strength from a common interest in the field of education. The goal of the Student Education Association is to develop among the members an understanding of and appreciation for the teaching profession, and to provide them with valuable information and contracts.
This organization enjoys freedom to recruit and to select members from the student body on the basis of their common interest in all levels and fields of education.
Hereinafter, we shall be known as the Student Education Association of Illinois State University.
Article I Purpose
Section 1. To develop among college students preparing to be teachers an understanding of the teaching profession, through participation in professional activities and study of history, ethics, organization, policies, and programs of local, state, and national educators.
Section 2. To give students, preparing to teach, the opportunity for practical experience in the profession and society.
Section 3. To interest young men and women in education as a lifelong career and to guide educational choices of persons admitted to approved programs of teacher education.
Section 4. To provide students preparing to be teachers a voice in matters affecting their interests in education and the teaching profession.
Section 5. To establish articulation between students and the national, state, and student education associations.
Article 2 Membership
Section 1. A member in the Student Education Association shall be a student who is receiving preparation at the undergraduate or graduate level for his/her initial teaching responsibility and whose dues in the local chapter shall be due and payable for the current school year. Membership is available at any time and its length is contingent on when membership commences.
Section 2. Optional membership at the state and national levels will be made available to all local members with dues to be maintained separate and distinct from local dues.
Article 3 Officers and Duties
Section 1. The officers of this organization shall be: President, Vice President, Secretary, Membership Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Coordinator, Newsletter Coordinator, Advertisement Coordinator, Historian, Campus Outreach, and Two Illinois Education Association Representatives.
Section 2. These officers shall maintain a 2.50 grade point average to retain their respective offices.
Section 3. All officers shall be responsible for editing their assigned spot on the Student Education Association website at least once a month.
Section 4. The President and/or Vice President shall be responsible for updating the bulliton board at least once a semester.
Section 5. All officers have the ability to form a committee if deemed necessary and approved by the majority of the board present.
Section 6. All officers will be responsible to attend all events, unless they have a valuable excuse.
Section 7. All officers shall hold their position for one (1) school year, where as they must be re-elected. Term runs from January to December for the positions of President, Membership Secretary, Treasurer, and Public Relations Coordinator. Term runs from May to April for Vice President, Secretary, Newsletter Coordinator, Advertising Coordinator, Historian, IEA representatives, and Campus Outreach, Membership Secretary.
Section 8. Duties of the Officers:
Part 1. President - shall preside over all membership and executive board meetings. He/she is a mediator between the organization and the faculty. He/she shall maintain communications with all board members to make sure everyone is on task. The president may appoint committees as deemed necessary.
Part 2. Vice President shall preside over all meetings in the absence of the president. He/she shall record and calculate Golden Apple Award points. He/she shall plan and organize the Awards Banquet. He/she shall be responsible for mass emailing members of any information that is of importantance.
Part 3. Secretary shall take complete notes of each membership and officers meeting. He/she shall be in charge of any and all correspondence. He/she shall be in charge of contacting speakers for meetings and presenting them with a gift. He/she shall be responsible for reserving rooms for meetings.
Part 4. Membership Secretary the membership secretary shall organize and implement membership drives at the beginning of each semester. He/she shall recruit new members through various methods (including an overhead for each board member to display in their classes). He/she shall accurately record membership on a computer database. He/she shall be responsible for related membership duties as deemed necessary.
Part 5. Treasurer shall keep a complete record of all monetary transactions carried on by the organization. His/her records shall be open to inspection at all times. He/she shall give a financial report at each membership meeting. He/she must set the deadline for payment of dues and is responsible for the collection of dues and assessments. He/she shall organize and execute membership drive, which takes place at the beginning of each semester along with the Membership Secretary. He/she shall create and preside over the fundraising committee.
Part 6. Public Relations Coordinator shall plan social functions for the organization, of which there will be at least one (1) per month. He/she shall co-advise the volunteer committee.
Part 7. Advertising Coordinators the advertising coordinators (2 of them) are responsible for the distribution of newsletters and advertisement. They shall advertise functions through posting flyers, The Vidette advertisement and any other means of announcement. Optional communication through e-mail system is available. Both are responsible for acquiring an advertising committee to assist with the production and distribution of advertisement. In addition, the Advertising Coordinators will have two separate names and responsibilities.
A. The first Advertisement Coordinator will be named the Newsletter Coordinator. He/she shall be responsible for the publication of the newsletter as well as the distribution of the newsletter. He/she shall be responsible for getting information from the board members to put into the newsletters.
B. The second Advertisement Coordinator will be named the Advertisement Coordinator. He/she shall be responsible for the making of the flyers for meetings and all other functions associated with the Student Education Association. He/she is responsible for the posting of the flyers.
Part 8. Historian shall keep a history of the organization and its functions through photographs and a scrapbook. He/she shall attend all organizational functions, takes photographs, and record names of individuals appearing in photographs. If Historian cannot attend a function, an appointed officer will complete the tasks. He/she is also in charge of the volunteer committee.
Part 9. Campus Outreach shall make connections between the Student Education Association and other organizations on campus. He/she is responsible for organizing the events with the organizations and encouraging attendance.
Part 10. Illinois Education Association Student Advisory Board the Illinois Education Association Student Advisory Board shall be responsible for attending all the Illinois Education Association student program board meetings. They shall keep up communications between the Student Education Association members here at Illinois State University and the Illinois Education Association. The Illinois Education Association Student Advisory Board are responsible for holding two conferences at Illinois State University, one in the fall and one in the spring. They may form a committee to help in the forming of these conferences. The Illinois Education Association Student Advisory Board shall have all the same general responsibilities of the other officers for the Student Education Association found in section 2 through 7.
Article 4 Elections of Officers
Section 1. The President will order a special meeting of this organization for the purpose of election near the end of the fall and spring semesters.
Section 2. Nominations shall be taken on the floor.
Section 3. After nominations, ballots will be made and distributed at an assembly of the members for the purpose of electing new officers.
Section 4. Officers are elected by a majority vote of the members present.
Article 5 Meetings
Section 1. Meetings will be held on the 1st Tuesday of each month. The exact time and place of each meeting will be set at the beginning of each semester. In case of special meetings, members will be contacted by mail, or e-mail at least twenty-four hours in advance.
Section 2. Members shall receive a tentative schedule in the newsletter and/or on the website.
Article 6 Dues
Section 1. Dues shall be decided on by the board for the academic term and shall be contingent on when membership is begun. Membership for one semester shall be less than the dues for the full year and membership must be renewed in the fall.
Article 7 Advisor
Section 1. The advisor of this organization shall be a member in good standing of the faculty of Illinois State University.
Article 8 Quorum
Section 1. The quorum of the Student Education Association shall consist of one quarter of the voting members plus one.
Article 9 Amending the Constitution
Section 1. If the organization wishes to add to or change this constitution, such changes must be brought before the members and approved by the aforementioned quorum.
